Most of the women wore flip-flops and carried their heels in their purse. Some still had curlers in their hair. Some changed from street clothes to performance clothes after getting through registration.

Once registered, I was assigned a chair in a row for the next phase of the wait where we were free to roam around until our row was called. The TV show may start with Blind Auditions, where only your voice is heard, but the open call auditions are about the total package. The Voice website says to dress as the performer that you aspire to be, and the styles were wide-ranging — from pony-tailed women looking like they were going to the grocery store to one red-sequin gowned woman who looked like she was going to the cabaret.

There were guys in hoodies and suits, women in tribal prints, and hair in every color of the rainbow. In the main waiting area, people took the chance to warm up and get out their jitters. At one wall, a crowd was gathered in a circle where singers took turns performing their audition pieces, clapping and cheering each other on.

This was the highlight of my day. I met people from all over America, heard songs from new-to-me artists, connected with other singer-songwriters and had a few good laughs. When you walk into the room, you want to OWN the room. And you want to initiate conversation. Go in confident and say something to them right away. It should feel and seem off the cuff. It should fit your personality and showcase what makes you special aside from your voice of course.

Crack jokes, talk about what you just experienced in the hall. Be different. Be unique. If you have a dry sense of humor, tell a joke, quietly in the mic that works with your personality and the situation. Make them laugh. You want to bring in good vibes with you. Relaxed vibes. You may have those butterflies raging battles on 3 fronts in your belly, but you want to project an air of confidence. Why He Turned It Down. Your gear should work. Triple check it the day of.

Replace you batteries in your guitar. Change your strings. Maybe bring a battery pack with you just in case. This is where they will bring you to a room with a camera and a casting director and they will ask you questions about your life. This is for them to find the most interesting people with the most interesting stories. These come from the casting session.

Something that sets you apart. Are you a working musician? Why are you a musician? What kinds of shows do you play? How long have you been performing? Is your great uncle John Coltrane? Is your husband Andy Grammer shoutout to Aijia! Is your daughter autistic?

Do you work 3 jobs to support your family? Are you a teacher? If you do not have a mic, make sure your recording device is close enough to get clear clean audio. This year, it looks like casting representatives are asking folks to upload a performance link onto your profile—so be sure your editing skills are down pat.

For these situations, expect to arrive early and put your name in for a song performance, or submit yourself weeks before to be selected as a featured artist. It's not an audition for The Voice per se, but it does get your foot in the door. You wait. Whether or not you get called back varies on the time of year. If you do, you should expect to receive your Artist Audition Pass one week prior to your audition, and you should bring both your Artist Audition Pass and a photo ID to your scheduled audition.
