Why does merlin wear a scarf

I saw during a tournament that many spectators also wore these so I think the writers went back and forth with this but eventually went with the scarf. The other though I had came from their interviews while filming merlin. Bradley Arthur often mentioned how cold or hot his armor made him feel on set and the weather there was often rainy and cold so maybe Colin merlin asked for some extra cover.

The film crew also wanted to make sure merlin stayed pale and would not allow him to sit in the sun during breaks in filming. At least he had a variety of colors. I remember seeing somewhere I think tumblr that's its purpose was to represent Merlin's beard. As you said yourself, Merlin's character is really young when he arrives to Camelot and Colin himself learned to shave on set so he couldn't grow a beard at that time. I'll admit though I think that was someone's personal opinion and not anything I've ever seen confirmed.
